5 health benefits of radish leaves or mooli ke patte

Health, according to the World Health Organization, is “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity”.[1] A variety of definitions have been used for different purposes over time. Health can be promoted by encouraging healthful activities, such as regular physical exercise and adequate sleep,[2] and by reducing or avoiding unhealthful activities or situations, such as smoking or excessive stress. Some factors affecting health are due to individual choices, such as whether to engage in a high-risk behavior, while others are due to structural causes, such as whether the society is arranged in a way that makes it easier or harder for people to get necessary healthcare services. Still other factors are beyond both individual and group choices, such as genetic disorders.

Are you guilty of cutting radish leaves and throwing them away? The abundant nutrients in them will surprise you! Go on, and read about them.

Most of us love to gorge on radish all throughout the winter season. The crunch, spice, and texture that radish brings to your palate is unbeatable. But, many people consider radish greens as waste and tend to throw them away. If you’re guilty of this culinary mistake, save your radish leaves from next time on!

You must be unfamiliar with the nutritional values of radish greens, commonly known in India as mooli ke patte. They are absolutely edible and offer a wide variety of health benefits too. Isn’t it surprising?

While you may still not be convinced to eat them, Delhi-based nutritionist Kavita Devgan’s nutritional insights about radish leaves may change your mind.

“The leaves of radish are even more nutrient dense than the radish itself. These greens are usually discarded without a thought,” says Devgan, who is also a weight loss consultant and a best-selling health writer.

Here are some of the health benefits you can reap by eating radish leaves:

    1. They can treat anaemia

Mooli ke patte deliver loads of iron, which helps cut fatigue, and are particularly good for people who are suffering from anaemia and low hemoglobin levels.

    2. Immunity booster

Radish greens are loaded with vitamin C, as much as 6 times more per serving than the radish itself. Including a good amount of vitamin C is known to boost the immune system big time. This, in turn, keeps you protected from seasonal allergies and even Covid-19.

    3. Keeps your cholesterol levels in check

The leaves of radish are just like any other leafy greens like spinach, kale or fenugreek in terms of the fibre content. There is an abundance of dietary fibre found in radish greens that can help strengthen the heart and keep your cholesterol levels sorted.

    4. Aids weight loss

With only 13 calories per cup and a whopping amount of nutrients, this leafy green can contribute to achieving your weight loss goals. Eat them as a salad or stir fry them with other greens in a bhaji. Plus, they will set your metabolism racing!

    5. A nutrient powerhouse

These leafy greens that you thought to be trash are actually a nutrient-rich product. They deliver a good amount of vitamin A, thiamine (vitamin B1), pyridoxine (vitamin B6), folic acid (vitamin B9), calcium and hard to find phosphorus, potassium and magnesium too. In addition to it, radish leaves provide a high level of potassium, iron, and vitamin C.

Rich in holistic benefits, these radish greens can be used to make green chutneys, radish roti or raita. They can also be used to cook scrumptious radish chilas. All you need is a little creativity to use these leaves with a sweet and earthy taste!
